About the group:

  • The BioEconomy Working Group is a consortium of individuals and groups who have an interest in developing economically, environmentally and socially sustainable biobased businesses. Funding is provided by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the Iowa Energy Center, Cargill Dow and the U.S. Department of Energy.

The group's objectives:

  • Research, analyze, model and implement profitable business strategies for farmers to organize as the “feedstock link” in value chains for biobased businesses
  • Explore, analyze and pilot strategies for farmer and local community equity investment in biobased businesses and biorefineries
  • Diversify Iowa’s cropping system by supporting projects that develop markets and/or products using new crops
  • Further develop the capacity of Iowa State University to respond to challenges facing farmers, entrepreneurs and biobusinesses by involving ISU faculty and staff in biobusiness development projects
  • Help facilitate communication among stakeholders in biobased businesses through newsletters, websites, meetings, forums and/or referrals
  • Leverage Kellogg/IEC funds for biobased value chains

Accomplishments:

  • Organized in August 2003
  • Recruited a group of committed people who are poised to make a difference in how value chains develop for biobased businesses in Iowa
  • Received funds for research and development projects, for support staff and for honoraria to participants

Project partners are the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, Practical Farmers of Iowa, Iowa State University Extension, and the ISU Colleges of Agriculture and Business.
