  • The Regional Food Systems Working Group supports education, conducts research, and facilitates partnerships to increase investment and support of community-based, economically sustainable, and environmentally and socially responsible regional food enterprises.

About the group: (back to top)

  • The Regional Food Systems Working Group has selected communities in northeast, southwest and southeast Iowa to build new markets and more effective networks for selling sustainably raised Iowa foods. The communities will receive grants totaling $50,000 and technical assistance over the next year. Read the news release.
  • What makes a regional food system vibrant and sustainable? A RFSWG subcommittee outlines key ingredients [PDF]
  • Review abstracts and presentations of projects funded by the working group and the Leopold Center Marketing and Food Systems Initiative.
  • What challenges do small to midsize food businesses face when working with a large distributor? A RFSWG project worked with three Iowa companies and the SYSCO Corporation, the largest foodservice distributor in North America. Read the final report from this project. [PDF]
  • More than 40 people participate in the working group. They include small business owners, producers, business, agriculture and engineering professors from ISU, community colleges and other Iowa universities, as well as representatives from several governmental agencies.
  • Our working group also has funded a number of grants for research and development conducted by members of the working group. Some of the grantees received additional funds from the Alces Foundation to build upon their work.

    --Six grants were issued January 2005
    --Four grants were issued January 2004

  • Research and document existing or potential economic, community and environmental impacts of regional and community-based food and fiber enterprises
  • Increase participation and cooperation among various colleges and departments at ISU, other Iowa university business and marketing centers/departments, economic development groups and lending institutions
  • Share project results with producers and others throughout the value chain who want to become involved in regional and community-based food system businesses
  • Link regional and community-based food system businesses with economic development
  • Improve community and ecological health and help farms and agricultural businesses achieve a greater level of success
